The background
In 2018, VR Bank Fulda was faced with the challenge of modernizing its branch network and cash management. The bank wanted to renew its systems to ensure reliability, improve the customer experience and increase security in times of increasing attacks on ATMs. This is when VR Bank Fulda began its partnership with KEBA.
The challenges
At the time, VR Bank Fulda was operating older cash systems that did not have the reliability and security features required in the modern banking world. The need for frequent manual intervention due to malfunctions, particularly for coin deposits, was both inefficient and annoying for customers. The bank also needed a solution that would enable seamless integration across multiple locations, from branches to high-traffic outdoor areas such as shopping centers.
The decisive factor was the robust recycling function of the evo series cash recyclers.
The solution
Like many of our customers, VR Bank Fulda visited our showroom, Studio Immergrün in Linz, and saw the benefits of the evo series for themselves. VR Bank Fulda decided to enter into a partnership with KEBA and installed cash recyclers from the evo series. The first installation took place as part of a major branch renovation in the city center of Fulda in 2018, where VR Bank became one of the first cooperative banks in Germany to rely on the then newly introduced evo series.
On the one hand, because the evo series cash recycler offer a high level of security - both physical and digital. Another decisive criterion was the robust recycling function, which enables high availability of the entire device. The coin recycling function integrated into the cash recycler on the KePlus FX10 was also a decisive factor for its use in the main branch. This made it possible to replace the ageing coin machines, eliminate manual data transfers and increase efficiency. On the other hand, the modern design, which enables seamless integration of the cash recyclers into the branch, was also convincing.

The results
The integration of the evo series cash recyclers led to considerable efficiency gains in cash management and also increased customer satisfaction at VR Bank Fulda. Large bundles of cash and coins can now be recyceld quickly at the main branch. The bank specifically decided to offer coin deposits at the cash recycler - in line with its customers and internal strategy, however, only where coins could also be deposited at ATMs in the past.
In addition, VR Bank Fulda is taking a proactive step in view of the increasing risk of ATMs being blown up and is installing evo series cash recyclers in outdoor concrete pavilions. This secure infrastructure offers customers a simple, round-the-clock service, while minimizing the risk of damage to the bank and surrounding buildings. One of the aims was to select highly frequented locations that customers visit regularly anyway. The pavilions were therefore placed in locations such as shopping centers, supermarket parking lots and communal areas in order to offer customers maximum convenience and quick accessibility. Acquiring the locations was not always easy, but 6 pavilions with KEBA Cash Recyclers have already been installed. Two more will follow by February 2025 and three pavilions are currently in the planning stage - VR Bank Fulda will then have a total of 11 autonomous self-service pavilions.
The future
In order to react to the ongoing threat of attacks on ATMs, VR Bank Fulda is expanding its security measures to provide the best possible protection for its customers and their property. In addition to the pavilions already mentioned, investments are also being made in dyeing technology, new surveillance cameras and mechanical protection for ATMs. In addition to the cash solutions, the KePlus D10 non-cash terminal is also a key component of VR Bank Fulda's self-service offering. Many customers, around 30% , are not digitally savvy and therefore like to use the transfer function on the KePlus D10. An important additional use case that VR Bank Fulda would like to cover in the future with the KePlus D10 self-service terminal is the digital letterbox: customers could scan documents at the terminal and send them directly to the relevant department instead of dropping them in the physical letterbox at the branch. This would avoid courier trips and make more efficient use of employees who currently process physical incoming mail manually.
Conclusion
VR Bank Fulda's collaboration with KEBA demonstrates how the thoughtful integration of modern technologies can transform cash processes, improve security and optimize the customer experience. By introducing the evo series with the FX10 systems, VR Bank Fulda not only modernized its infrastructure, but also created a more secure and efficient banking environment that meets today's needs.
